To execute the sourcing and selection strategy for part of the Spirits category, owning and supporting the delivery of agreed target KPI’s in line with category strategy. To achieve optimum cost & margin through effective negotiation, supplier management and identification of the most effective sourcing routes.
This role is working within the wider Beers, Ciders & Spirits team under a C6 Buying Manager; with specific accountability for part of our Spirits range. The supplier base is broad: ranging from large branded suppliers to newer, smaller suppliers; as well as own brand suppliers.

A C4 Buyer will have good commercial acumen
A C4 Buyer is able to deliver strategic projects with support from a Buying Manager, undertaking most tasks independently. Projects will tend to deliver in-category change with step-change requiring greater support.
A C4 Buyer will make decisions based upon commercial factors and will be able to present them to a C6-level audience and above and deal with moderate challenges. A C4 Buyer understands the direct impact of decisions and is able to identify a list of alternative options.
A C4 Buyer will develop strong commodity knowledge including understanding the immediate components and drivers of an agreement.
A C4 Buyer will have the ability to negotiate and influence an external supply base to gain agreement to the categories strategic and commercial objectives
A C4 buyer will have the ability to work within cross functional teams to deliver BAU & specific category projects
Accountable for the financial delivery of the category with KPI’s of sales, profitability and market share.
With support from the Buying Manager develop and implement strategic initiatives that reflect the category’s objectives.
Communicate and influence stakeholders to Senior Manager level to gain commitment to the category’s objectives
With support from the Buying/Category Manager, direct and lead project teams to deliver the category objectives
With the framework set by the Buying Manager, agree all business as usual activity such as supplier selection, supplier set-up, promotional planning, volume planning, range reviews and maintenance.
Operate as part of the Category Team and support the development of category objectives.

Essential technical skills, knowledge and experience
Minimum of 1 years experience in a commercial environment
Commercial awareness and analytical thinking skills e.g. understanding cost make-up and alternative pricing models.
Ability to work independently & manage own time to deliver results.
Ability to lead small cross functional teams with support from the Buying Manager.
Ability to build strong stakeholder relationships to Senior Manager level.
Strong verbal and written influencing skills up to Senior Manager level.
Ability to manage broad supply base with support from Buying Manager
Ability to build strong knowledge of a commodity area and communicate fluently with a supplier or stakeholder
Desirable technical skills knowledge and experience
Knowledge of relevant Sainsbury’s operations (stores, depots and store support centres).
Knowledge and understanding of the Beers Wines and Spirits industry would be advantageous
