Position is accountable for assisting with the leadership, oversight & strategic direction of the Programmatic CRO category with focus on assigned area of responsibility. Assist management in the efficient execution of Programmatic CRO processes/strategy, understanding needs of assigned area, identifying and implementing best practices and meeting strategic objectives. Individual will act as the key interface with both internal and external stakeholders to successfully execute and shape the procurement strategy directly and through team, as applicable, in accordance with business and portfolio needs to support effective execution of outsourced clinical trials.
The senior category manager, Programmatic CRO will build, lead, & drive related activities with both internal and external stakeholders of the Programmatic CRO category in support of the successful execution of outsourced clinical trials within agreed timelines and to the highest quality possible. Responsible to leverage expertise & efficiencies both within area of responsibility and across the category (and more broadly as applicable). Accountable for the successful execution and development, as applicable, of the Programmatic CRO strategy including identifying new/updated sourcing/strategy opportunities, areas for improvement and adapting processes to meet stakeholder needs while balancing efficiencies obtained through standard processing; ensure compliance with corporate process, systems, and strategies.
Act as main liaison with external vendors. Leads negotiations and executes Master Service Agreements, Service Agreements, Work Orders and Change Orders with varying complexity within the Programmatic CRO category. Initiate and manage sourcing strategy development and competitive bidding events with high complexity. This individual will shape business partner strategies and meet business needs through providing external market insights. Serve as an advocate for Programmatic CRO policies and processes. Act as point of contact for resolution of any ad-hoc inquires related to Programmatic CRO and may serve as a Global Supplier Relationship Manager (GSRM) for key category suppliers.
Partner with stakeholders that are globally located; establish and maintain strong working relationships with CROs/AROs and applicable ancillary suppliers, Clinical Operations Teams, Therapeutic Areas, External Alliances, Legal, Healthcare Compliance and other identified stakeholders to effectively execute the Programmatic CRO strategy.
Work proactively to increase global awareness of group processes and procedures and train and educate stakeholders. Responsible for the tracking, maintenance, and reporting of staff and departmental metrics including ensuring accuracy and timely input. Adapt metrics to meet needs of area of responsibility and share on a standard interval. Utilize metrics to drive discussions and identify and execute upon areas of opportunity. Ensure existence and accuracy of relevant process documentation, communication and monitoring/contingency plans.
Responsible for assessing risks independently and developing effective and balanced negotiation strategies that drive value for the business. Individual will partner with key customers to address team support and study specific performance issues with suppliers. Manage and develop resources within his/her area of responsibility. Direct issues requiring escalations appropriately.

Minimum of a BA/BS is required. Business, life sciences or related field preferred. Advanced degree; MBA, Ph.D., JD, etc. is preferred.
Minimum 10 years in a business environment required. A minimum of 5 years of experience in procurement or sourcing as a user or provider. Must have an understanding of financial and legal contract language.
Demonstrated functional experience or knowledge of at least one of the following is required: Clinical trials, IVRS, project management, laboratory services, GLPs, CMPs, GCPs.
Prior successful supervisory/people management experience preferred.
Experience in the pharmaceutical industry and in drug development is a preferred.
Excellent communication skills (oral and written), and a results-oriented and customer-focused attitude is required.
Able to prioritize requests and propose effective cost/customer service alternatives when necessary.
Must have experience exercising judgment in developing new approaches and resolving issues.
