Dutch retailer Jumbo has opens new automated NDC in Netherlands
Date: 11 August 2020
Dutch retailer Jumbo has opened a new automated national distribution centre (NDC) in Nieuwegein.
Serving eventually 670 stores in the Netherlands and Belgium
The new NDC spans 45,000 square metres and is due to serve initially 100 stores, before supplying 670 stores by the end of the year. The site will process more than 11,000 dry, long shelf life items.
In addition, NDC receives the highest possible BREEAM design certificate for sustainability and is the most sustainably designed building in the world.
To qualify for this sustainability label, Jumbo has used sustainable and energy-saving building materials and lighting as much as possible. The new building is also equipped with about 13,500 solar panels and an installation that provides so much heat that no traditional heating is required. Rainwater is also collected and reused, while the surroundings of the building are ecologically decorated, including bee nests and special shell boxes, breeding nests and a nest wall for birds.
